Yes Zelig-Gump. And Dr. Graboyes you still claim random? In my analysis, Dr. Hand is correct in the suggestion statistics play a part but not the whole part. I attribute these remarkable firsts to a particular talent of being in the right place (for Reid) at the right time. This is Reid's song of meaningful coincidences, more specifically seriality--coincidence series that are potentially observable by another person (rather than one element being in the mind of the coincider.) The creation of meaningful coincidences seems to involve varying degrees of probability, mystery and agency. Dr. Grayboyes's cognitive dissonance is resolvable by including agency.
Funny … I was just at dinner tonight and I explained the Hand vs Beitman debate and my place in the middle, though probably a bit toward the Hand side. I will say that unless Reid has changed radically in recent years, he and I share rather outgoing personalities—a gift of gab. So if there are coincidences to mine, he and I are probably more likely to hit the gold than a lot of people.
I love these
For me it has always been about discovering myself in the middle or edge of some famous moment
I was there:
At the press launching of the Cabbage Patch doll
The opening of Tower Records in NYC
Worked with Orson Welles on his last film
Built the set for Tennesee Williams last play
I was staying at the hotel in Philadelphia when the Legionares Disease broke out
Asked to assist in installing set for new play .... lower East side opening of Little Shop of Horrors
Hitchhiking in NC
picked up by woman from small town
I told her I had met a girl from there the month before ... “that’s my daughter”
Got picked up hitchhiking in NC and when I told the man I was from Petersburg ... I waxed poetic about a woman he had met there ... “that’s my mother”
Zelig-meets-Forrest Gump!
