Timely and excellent recommendation. Despite a career that started in a specialized profession (forest engineering), I pursued independence through self employment and trended toward a jack of all trades and master of none.

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”

Occupations 1-6 and 9 and 10 are still open to PhDs. Another reason to get into a PhD program is that a MA/MS is often awarded after passing qualifying exams in the second year. Yet tuition is typically waved for PhD candidates. So for many, a PhD program turns out to be a free ride to an MA/MS.
